Shanghai has led the world for years, handling volumes measured in the tens of millions of TEUs annually. Singapore follows as the planet's great transshipment crossroads. Why rankings matter beyond bragging rights

For a country, a top-tier port is strategic infrastructure: it lowers trade costs for every exporter and importer in its hinterland, anchors industrial zones, and attracts shipping services that smaller neighbors must access via feeders. That is why port investment features so prominently in national development plans — and in geopolitics.
